The XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project : high redshift clusters of galaxies from the XMM archive

The evolution and properties of distant clusters of galaxies provides intereseting contraints on the cosmological parameters. However, so far only few clusters of galaxies have been found at redshifts beyond z=1. XMM-Newton provides unprecedented sensitivity for the detection of new clusters of galaxies. I report on an ongoing survey for distant clusters of galaxies based on the XMM archive. We use R and z band imaging at the ESO VLT to identify distant (z > 1) cluster candidates, whose redshift will then be confirmed spectroscopically. The first spectroscopic identification for the survey lead to the discovery of the most distant X-ray selected cluster of galalaxies at a redshift of z=1.39 .
