The Assembly of High Redshift Galaxies - New Insights from SINS

Much progress has been made in the past decade in our knowledge of the global evolution of galaxies over cosmic time. Yet, detailed information about the properties of galaxies at high redshift is still scarce and many issues remain open concerning the complex baryonic processes that drive galaxy formation and evolution. The near-IR integral field spectrometer SINFONI at the ESO VLT now allows us to probe in unprecedented detail the morphologies, dynamics, and physical properties of z 1.5-3 galaxies from familiar rest-frame optical diagnostics, on typical spatially-resolved scales as small as 1-5 kpc. I will present results from our "SINS" survey of high redshift galaxies carried out with SINFONI, and will discuss the implications on the nature, evolution, and star formation properties of massive star-forming galaxies at early stages of evolution.
