Galaxy formation and the evolution of the mass-metallicity relation

The relation between stellar mass and gas-phase metallicity is a powerful tool to test models of formation and evolution of galaxies as the monolithic closed-box model, or the hierarchical model. We will show that, unlike other scaling relations, the mass-metallicity relation is not dominated by the global star formation history of the universe which affects all galaxies. Conversely, the shape and the evolution of the mass-metallicity relation is sensible to the history of galaxies merging rate. The discussion will be illustrated by the results obtained with the VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey (VVDS).
