The geometry of the accretion flow around accreting black holes (and neutron stars)

Astrophysical black holes are characterised by just two numbers : Mass and spin. The spacetime in the vicinity of a black hole, and hence the dynamics of matter falling into the black hole, depends critically on the black-hole spin. X-ray measurements of accreting black holes can be used to estimate the black-hole spin. I will discuss some of these measurements, and I will review the current controversy concerning the proposal that the accretion disc around black holes always extends down to the marginally stable orbit. I will then compare with the situation in accreting neutron stars.
