3D imaging of the solar interior

3D imaging of the solar interior

The cross-covariance of the random wave field recorded at two locations on the solar surface is directly related to the Green’s function between these two points. Cross-covariances are used to make images of the solar interior : 3D maps of flow velocities, internal structure, and the magnetic field. A distinction is made between (i) weak inhomogeneities obtained by solving a linear inverse problem and (ii) strong perturbations, such as surface magnetism, infered using forward numerical modeling techniques. I will show results about solar convection, sunspots, and large-scale flows, which are potentially important to better understand the solar dynamo. I will also discuss observational advances and mention the successful launch of the Solar Dynamics Observatory.
