Magnetic Topologies of Young Stars

An important issue in stellar astrophysics is the evolution of magnetic fields on Sun-like stars in the crucial first few million years of their lives. Magnetic fields influence the development of young stars and their planets in a number of important ways, including influencing the angular momentum of the system and changing the structure of the circumstellar disc. Using spectropolarimetric instruments such as ESPaDOnS and Narval, we can map the surface magnetic fields. By observing stars of a range of masses and ages we can trace the changes in the magnetic dynamo as the star contracts and the internal structure changes, and characterise the star-disc interactions. In this talk I will explain the techniques used and present some of the recent results of this work.
